Desk Chair Refresh

DISCLAIMER: This post is extremely simple and is only being posted for those with before/after infatuations.

I've had this chair since I was a little girl. It was once white, then brown, and most recently cream with a monogram (see below).

You probably know by now that I can't leave any craft unattempted, so I decided to upgrade my sturdy old chair with a fresh coat of paint. I like to categorize the covering of the monogram and cheesy craft paint as "adulting."

Sherwin Williams, among other brands, have paint samples (yes, for walls. if you can't handle that I put wall paint on this chair you are free to continue surfing the internet) that go on sale every so often at various home stores for somewhere in the ballpark of $2 or less. I got this 3.75 oz jar from Lowes in January and chose a nice shade of blue/grey called Grayish.

Truth be told it ended up on my chair because we repainted our entire downstairs hallway with a different blue/grey paint and I wasn't going to use this sample on any of my walls. 

It took two coats a little patience but it didn't look too shabby once I finished! I have a chair cushion that I use on this chair that I'll be recovering to match. We'll save that whole excursion for another post...

DIY: Linen Closet Makeover

Remember last year when we put in an Elfa closet in our pantry? We loved it so much that we decided to do our upstairs linen closet this winter. Not only does this make a great indoor project, but the Container Store offers 25% off Elfa products each January. Did I mention that you make an appointment with a designer who walks you through various configurations to find one that suits your needs and budget? We just had to take our measurements with us and make an appointment (weekends during the sale are crazy!)

We began by removing the wooden shelving that was already in our closet. The shelves were bowing and the space wasn't idea for our linens, vacuum and cleaning products.

Since the closet had been painted and there were areas that were covered with wood, the paint seams were uneven. My husband had to sand them down so that the new paint would provide even coverage.

It's certainly difficult to see in this photo, but we painted the inside of the closet grey. In our first Elfa closet project I had purchased 'oops paint' from Home Depot for $3. There was still half of the quart left it covered the entire inside of the closet.

The Elfa solutions are so easy to install. My husband had them up as soon as the paint was dry and I went to organizing shortly thereafter. There's even ample space for our vacuum too! We've also added a hanging rack to our door now that we know it'll close with the vacuum inside. It's great for the little things that often get lost in the closet - nail polish, shoe polish, toilet paper, bath bombs, etc.

DIY Edition: Bathroom Painting

Meet my downstairs half bathroom. If it had a name it would be something difficult to say like Rikkitikkitimbo. Why? Because this bathroom has been the epitome of difficult. 

Here's a little backstory... 

Before heading out of town to celebrate Christmas with our families, we purged our well with bleach. Over the course of two days, the bleach sat in our water lines. It ate some bacteria and removed some grime while also loosening the water calcification deposits that had formed on some of our old copper piping. So, when we got home and flushed out the pipes and drained the water heater we ran into leaks in our guest bathroom. 

Friends, I'm telling you - this was no picnic. We were supposed to cook the most extravagant Christmas dinner that you've ever seen. Due to this tragedy, I had to move the whole smorgasbord to my brother's house so that the men could get the pipes fixed and we could get our water turned back on. I digress, let's talk about painting. Awful as all of that was, let's get to the good stuff. When that nightmare ended we got to repaint our guest bathroom!

Here is the color that we chose. I apologize, it really looks so much different in the lights that I chose to photograph. I can best describe it as grey during the day and blue at night. It's a versatile color and I feel that I got two colors in one. I love this since I have major commitment issues with paint.

Since we don't know what the exact color of our bathroom was, it was a perfect excuse to choose another and repaint. After our contractor came and patched and sanded our walls we were set. 

Here are some before and after photos (guilty, they were taken with my phone :(...) to hold you over through the end of this post. 

This little corner was a bear to paint. We didn't move the vanity, but if you're doing your bath, I'd advise you to do so!
